Feb. 23, 2026 — The University of Florida College of Medicine received a record amount of funding from the National Institutes of Health in fiscal year 2025, underscoring the institution’s sustained commitment to accelerating medical discovery.
The UF College of Medicine received $176 million in NIH funding during FY25, which supported more than 300 research projects. UF now ranks No. 40 in NIH funding among all medical schools, and No. 20 among public institutions.
Additionally, two UF programs ranked in the top 10 nationally, reaching No. 2 in the nation for neurosurgery and No. 3 for neurosciences. These programs are represented by the Lillian S. Wells Department of Neurosurgery and a combined ranking of the departments of Neuroscience and Neurology.
The Blue Ridge Institute for Medical Research rankings, published annually, are derived from data compiled from the NIH shortly after the end of the federal fiscal year.
Azra Bihorac, M.D., M.S., FCCM, FASN, the senior associate dean for research at the UF College of Medicine, said the breadth and depth of research conducted at the college has led to significant findings and is crucial for delivering meaningful care to patients and communities.
“In just five years, we have transformed the trajectory of research at the UF College of Medicine,” said Bihorac, also the R. Glenn Davis Professor of Medicine, Surgery and Anesthesiology. “With NIH funding increasing 66% since FY2020 — reaching the highest level in our history — and our rise into the top 20 among public institutions, this momentum reflects intentional investments in exceptional faculty, research infrastructure and operational excellence.”
