Sarah Vinson, M.D. ’07, and her team care for adolescents whose needs are often misunderstood

Jan. 4, 2023 — Sarah Vinson, M.D. ’07, has devoted her career to expanding and strengthening the lens through which minority communities see themselves, focusing on the relationship between the African American experience and mental health.
Vinson was recently featured in The New York Times science section, where she discussed her team’s work to address the needs of adolescent patients with often misunderstood and unaddressed mental health needs.
“When you look at all these things, you can see that this is not something inherently wrong with the child but that could be an explainable, understandable response,” she said. “When you don’t take the time to do this stuff, or learn it, you just end up throwing labels on a kid.”
