Resident welcome: Celebrating new and returning Gator physicians
At the start of July, the UF College of Medicine welcomed 207 new residents
July 5, 2022 — At the start of July, the University of Florida College of Medicine welcomed 207 new residents to the UF Health family. In addition to 43 returning UF graduates, The Gator Nation grew with doctors from 26 states, Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico and 11 other countries.
Residents typically begin orientation and start their new training positions in late June or early July at medical centers around the nation after learning in spring which programs they matched into. UF offers a number of competitive specialties across its academic health centers throughout the state of Florida.
Hear from a few new residents
“I’m really ready to move on to residency here at UF. It’s been a long process. I’m looking forward to what the next steps are and diving into learning how to be an OB-GYN and how to take care of my patients. I think ‘excitement’ would be the word that defines how I feel right now.” — Nathan Burke, M.D. ’22, UF OB-GYN resident
“I never had to contemplate whether I belong here at this program. I think that’s part of the reason why UF is a great place … I’m really excited and honored. The field of urology is really starting to evolve. It’s a great field to enter because there’s still so much more to be done, to be discovered. There’s a good mix of both surgical and clinical medicine, and you get to make your patients feel better.” — Elizabeth Kwenda, M.D. ’22, UF urology resident
“I’m especially excited to be starting obstetrics and gynecology residency. It’s something that I’ve looked forward to and hoped for for a long time, and I am especially excited to be staying here at the University of Florida to continue that legacy.” — Michelle McCraw, M.D. ’22, UF OB-GYN resident
