Honoring excellence
2019 Honors Convocation awards medical students’ achievements
September 17, 2019 – Students, family members, faculty and staff gathered in the George T. Harrell, M.D., Medical Education Building Monday afternoon to honor the numerous achievements of second-, third- and fourth-year medical students, who received certificates, pins, plaques and monetary stipends. The 2019 Honors Convocation recognized those who have excelled in the classroom, the laboratory and in community service, according to associate dean for student affairs Patrick Duff, M.D., who presided over the event.
Amelia Watson of the class of 2020 received the Caroline Annette Cody, M.D., Memorial Scholarship, established by the class of 2000 to honor the memory of Caroline Cody, who was tragically killed in 2000 during her first year of medical school. Cody posthumously received a medical degree from the UF College of Medicine in 2003.
Based on nominations from peers, the Cody Memorial Scholarship is presented to a fourth-year student who best exemplifies Cody’s “remarkable personal characteristics and altruistic service to the community.”
Caroline Cody’s parents, Dr. William and Betty Cody, were on hand to present the award to Watson.
“It has been healing to come here and be a part of this ceremony throughout the years,” Betty Cody said. “We know that every year, there’s an outstanding student who receives this award.”
Following the ceremony, Watson said she was humbled to receive the award that was established by Cody’s classmates.
“It was especially meaningful to meet and receive the award from her parents,” she said.
UF College of Medicine interim dean Joseph A. Tyndall, M.D., closed the ceremony by inviting the award recipients to “treasure this moment.”
“You present the essence of what it is to be a student at the UF College of Medicine,” Tyndall said. “The great things you’re doing not just in academics but in many spheres of life — that’s what is really important.”
