Honors Convocation rewards achievements
2018 UF College of Medicine Honors Convocation recognizes the classes of 2019, 2020 and 2021
Sept. 18, 2018 — Students of the UF College of Medicine classes of 2019, 2020 and 2021 gathered Monday afternoon in the South Learning Studio of the Harrell Medical Education Building for the annual Honors Convocation ceremony. Associate dean for student affairs Patrick Duff, M.D., congratulated the students, who were presented with accolades for work well done in the research lab, the basic science classroom and in their clinical rotations. Awards given out Monday also recognized the students’ professionalism, humanism and community and international service efforts.

This award recognizes the senior student with the highest third-year G.P.A. who is a graduate of a Palm Beach County high school.
Amber Johnson, class of 2019
Scott Gross, M.D., Memorial Pathology Book Award
This award was established by members of the class of 1988 in memory of their classmate, Scott Gross, who died of cancer shortly after graduation. The award recognizes a student who, during the first year of medical school, best represented the attributes displayed by Scott—a sense of humor, interest in art and music, active participation in class projects and most importantly, courage and perseverance. The recipient is determined by nominations from classmates.

Jeffrey Metcalfe Memorial Award
This award was established by the class of 2014 to honor a classmate who died in the early months of medical school. It recognizes a student who, during the first year of school, demonstrated academic excellence and great personal integrity. The recipient is selected on the basis of nominations from peers.

Mark W. Herrbold Memorial Award
This award was established by Francis Herrbold, M.D. ’98, in memory of his father. It recognizes a senior student who has overcome great personal adversity and demonstrated extraordinary determination and perseverance in pursuit of a medical education. The award is based on nominations from peers.

The Barbara B. Bennett, M.D., Memorial Award

This award is presented to a second-year student who has demonstrated interest in pursuing family medicine as a career, promoted the goal of suicide prevention and worked to improve awareness of the debilitating effects of depression.
