More than 200 UF College of Medicine faculty members and guests attended a faculty appreciation reception April 12 at the UF President’s House, honoring professors’ achievements and years of service.

Michael L. Good, M.D., dean of the College of Medicine, said he wants to make the faculty appreciation reception an annual spring event to honor and recognize the college’s outstanding faculty and their achievements.

“In years past, it seems like we had everything in one week,” said Good. “We need more chances to celebrate.”

Lifetime Achievement Awards from the College of Medicine Faculty Council were given to Kathleen Shiverick, Ph.D., a professor emeritus of pharmacology and therapeutics, and Edward R. Block, M.D., a distinguished professor of medicine and former chair of the department of medicine.

Block was out of the country, but Shiverick, who is the first female recipient of the award, accepted her award at the event. Frank Bova, Ph.D., faculty council president and a professor in the department of neurosurgery, presented the award to Shiverick, who, he said, was described by her peers as a lifelong productive researcher with a love of mentoring.

“Words are very difficult at this time – it’s very humbling,” Shiverick said. “Thank you very much for this honor.”

Good also presented UF faculty service pins to professors with 10, 20, 30 and 40 years of consecutive service to the college.

“We have great faculty and everything this college accomplishes is because of you,” he said.
