Dr. Michael L. Good, interim dean of the College of Medicine, announced today the appointment of Dr. Timothy C. Flynn as interim senior associate dean for clinical affairs at the College of Medicine.
Dr. Flynn has served the College of Medicine in a number of leadership roles during his 24-year tenure at the University of Florida. He currently serves as associate dean for graduate medical education and professor of surgery. He has distinguished himself nationally in graduate medical education and academic surgery, currently serving on the board of directors of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and having just completed a term as chair of the American Board of Surgery. In addition, Dr. Flynn currently serves on the Department of Veterans Affairs Blue Ribbon Panel on VA-Medical School Affiliations.
Dr. Flynn is well-prepared to take on this additional role, Good said. The senior associate dean for clinical affairs works as the point person for planning and implementing many quality and patient safety initiatives throughout the hospital and clinics. Dr. Flynn has focused on these issues throughout his career at the College of Medicine.
“Because of his many years leading our graduate medical education program, Dr. Flynn has great insight into the operational aspects of the clinical departments and the concerns of the clinical chairs, their program directors, clinical faculty, and hospital leadership, both at Shands and the VA” said Good. “He has great loyalty to the college and commitment to its missions.”
Dr. Flynn graduated from Louisiana State University with a bachelor’s degree in zoology in 1971 and earned his medical degree from the Baylor College of Medicine in 1974 before joining the U.S. Navy. After his Navy service, he completed his residency at the University of Texas Medical School at Houston and then served as an assistant professor there for four years before joining UF in 1984. He is a member of the AOA Honor Society, served as president of the Alachua County Medical Society and has held several national appointments with the VA.
